For what it's worth, our usual parties tend to run, if you count cleaning, booze, food, etc, between $400 and $1000. Usually towards the low end of that range. While we're quite happy to take donations to the "Nerdvana Fund for Booze and Loose Wimmin", we're unlikely to ever require a minimum in the collection plate before a party happens. If we couldn't afford to throw the party, we just /wouldn't/.

The birthday party was an exception, and I did consider imposing a small cover charge (and various ways to get out of paying it [WRITE ME A BIO, YOU BASTARDS!]), but while it did end up costing an arm, a leg, and a handful of livers, I didn't end up needing to collect anything. All the cash people gave me ended up in the tip jar for our lovely bartendresses.
Speaking of, I still need to scan the (itemized) bar receipt and post it.
