I put it into the tivo a few weeks back on a whim, don't remember why.
I'm glad I did.
This guy, Greg House, is me.
If I had gone into medicine, if I had a double specialty in infectious disease and nephrology instead of perl and html, I would so be this guy. He's contrary, he's bitchy, he's got *just* enough respect for authority to avoid getting fired, he hates most of what they make him do. But when he's on his real game, when he's doing that thing he really does, he's /damned/ good.
He's also addicted to vicodin - apparently he was shot in the leg. In one episode he goes off it for a week in exchange for a month off clinic duty. It wasn't pretty.
From this week's episode, "Occam's Razor":
"Hello sick people, and their loved ones. In the interest of saving time and avoiding a lot of boring chit-chat later, I'm doctor Gregory House, you can call me Greg. I'm one of three doctors staffing this clinic this morning." "Short, sweet. Grab a file." "THIS ray of sunshine is doctor Lisa Cuddy. Doctor Cuddy runs this whole hospital, so unfortunately, she's much too busy to deal with you.
I am a BORED.. certified diagnostician with a double specialty of infections disease and nephrology. I am also the only doctor currently employed by this clinic who is forced to be here against his will. That is true, isn't it? But not to worry, because for most of you this job could be done by a monkey with a bottle of Motrin. Speaking of which, if you're particularly annoying, you may see me reach for this. This is vicodin. It's mine, you can't have any. And no, I do not have a pain management problem. I have a pain problem. But who knows, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm too stoned to tell.
So, who wants me?
Aaand, who would rather wait for one of the other guys?
Okay, well, I'll be in exam room one, if you change your mind."
"You once asked me why I think I'm always right. And I realized that you're right. At least, I think you're right. I don't really know, now do I?"
"That smugness of yours really is an attractive quality." "Thank you. It was either that or get my hair highlighted. Smugness is easier to maintain." "I get that you're not a big believer in the catching flies with honey approach, but do you really think you'll collect a jar full of them by cleverly taunting them?" "Flies, no. Doctors, sure. If I'd said to Foreman, Nice try, it was a great guess, but not this time, what do you think he'd be doing now?" "I think he'd be going home not feeling like a piece of crap." "Exactly." "You want him to feel like a piece of crap?" "No. I don't want him going home."
"You want to bet on a patient's health?" "You think that's bad luck? You think that god will smite him because of our insensitivity? Well, if god does, you make a quick $50."
"Occam's razor: The simplest explanation is almost always somebody screwed up."
"Reality is almost always wrong."
"Make a note. I should never doubt myself." "I think you'll remember. You know, it wouldn't hurt for you to be wrong every now and then." "What, you don't care about these people?"
